“Then this is a real place! ... I thought it was just something in the Bible.” - From Theodor Herzl’s Altneuland
I am an Israeli/Dutch writer and photographer, based in the US. This year I am back in Israel on a sabbatical with my family. As I go about my daily life here, I photograph and interview people I encounter to learn about their life, their history, and their hopes and fears for the future. I am constantly surprised by the openness and thoughtfulness with which they respond. Together, these individual portraits and narratives tell a story about Israeli society that is much richer and more complicated than any single ideology can express.
